A new memoir from Sunday Times and New York Times best-selling author Cathy Glass.

When Cathy receives a call about a terminally ill widower terrified of leaving his son all alone in the world, she is wracked with sadness and indecision. Can she risk exposing her own young children to a little boy on the brink of bereavement?

Eight-year-old Michael is part of a family of two, but with his beloved father given only months to live and his mother having died when he was a toddler, he could soon become an orphan. Will Cathy's own young family be able to handle a child in mourning?

To Cathy's surprise, her children insist that this boy deserves to be as happy as they are, prompting Cathy to welcome Michael into her home. A cheerful and carefree new member of the family, Michael devotedly prays every night, believing that when the time is right, angels will come and take his Daddy to be with his Mummy in heaven.

However, incredibly, in the weeks that pass, the bond between Cathy's family, Michael and his kind and loving father, Patrick, grows. Even more promising, Patrick is looking healthier than he's done in weeks.

But just as they are settling into a routine of blissful normality, an unexpected and disastrous event shatters the happy group, shaking Cathy to the core. Cathy can only hope that her family and Michael's admirable faith will keep him strong enough to rebuild his life.

When foster carer Cathy Glass is first presented with the possibility of caring for 8-year-old Michael, she's instantly a bit hesitant. After all, Michael isn't like most other children in the system, abused or neglected. Michael is a beloved only child, whose mother died when he was a toddler. Now his father is also dying of cancer, eager to make sure Michael will have a good home after he passes.

Any qualms Glass feels are quickly calmed when her own children, 4-year-old Paula and 8-year-old Adrian, insist that Michael come stay with them. After all, he needs someone to help him, and their family is in the business of helping.

Before long, Glass' family becomes close with Michael and his father Patrick. The children enjoy one another's company, and the easygoing, kindhearted Patrick is a natural friend for Glass. It becomes hard to believe that his condition is so serious and death might come at any time. Perhaps the doctors made a mistake?

Glass takes a difficult subject (made even more so by the fact of its centering upon a young child) and manages to make it both hopeful and thought-provoking on a number of levels, from the practical aspects of a parent knowing he must soon leave an eight-year-old alone in the world to the muddy complexities of religion/faith.

My one complaint about this book, as with Glass' others, is that she tends to bog her story down with superfluous details. For instance, when Glass first meets with Patrick at the social services building, she doesn't just say she attended the meeting. She first tells her readers she entered through double doors, went down the hallway, up to the second floor, and then it was the second door to the right. While detail is certainly wonderful for an author to employ, in some cases such as this it actually detracts from the meat of the story. Glass would do better to remember that sometimes less IS more.

The Night the Angels Came (Audible Audio Edition) Cathy Glass Denica Fairman HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books Reviews

So sad. A real story of the courage of a terminally ill man and the efforts of him and his friends and especially the foster carer of his only son, to prepare that boy for his impending death in the face of previous great sadness and tragedy. Although very sad, the story of supporting this young boy from when he first had supported care when his father's health had deteriorated until his father's death, is documented well and is enlightening and encouraging as the journey of the young boy as he struggles to come to terms with and accept his father's illness and death is heart breaking and heart warming.
I'm such a fan of Cathy Glass' books. This one is certainly no different. When Cathy is asked to care for a child whose father is dying from cancer and whose mother has already died, she is hesitant to take it on. However, when she decides to move forward, she is blessed with nurturing a child dealing with the pain of losing a beloved parent and given a look into a child's faith which could move mountains. This one is a tear jerker for certain.
Cathy Glass is a wonderful author, she manages to draw you into the book, you feel as if you are experiencing each and every trial and tribulation that the character is going through.

Many tears were shed while reading this book and there were times when I had to put the book down and take a few moments to compose myself. It brought to light that there are so many people who are going through worse situations than what you the reader are going through.

Thank you Miss Glass for once again another thoughtful, heartfelt read.
While I enjoy Cathy's books, there is needless repetition of step by step daily routines. For example, going upstairs, grabbing one's "wash bag," brushing teeth, showering, putting on gowns, and it gets repeated over and over. Why not say "getting ready for bed" and be done with it? The story is a touching one and doubly sad, as Cathy had feeling for and a future that was not to be, with the father of the boy she was caring for.
Cathy Glass's books are so poignant, so touching, and so tear-producing that there is not a lot to say. Cathy is a "carer", a British term for foster mother. Each of her books focuses on one particular child and the challenges she faces in helping that child. In this story, Michael is a bright, well-cared for, well-behaved, and very much loved boy. Sadly, his mother passes away when he was a baby and his father is dying. Cathy steps in to take care of Michael when his dad is hospitalized, and tries to help him face reality in a compassionate, yet realistic way. In some of Cathy's books, her children are much older, but this is one of her earlier stories and her own two children are about the same age as Michael. This is a quick read, and so engrossing that you won't want to put it down.
A moving story of how a man can die well, especially by making arrangements for his only child Michael. Michael's mother had died when he was too young to remember her. Patrick did an excellent job raising Michael as a single parent. Before Michael was eight years old Patrick was diagnosed with lung cancer, which did not respond to any treatment. When Patrick was told he probably had only three months to live , he sought help in finding a foster home where Michael could be cared for when Patrick might be hospitalized, and finally, went into hospice care. Of course Cathy, after some hesitation, took on the difficult situation. Michael came to them unexpectedly soon, when Patrick collapsed at home. Cathy and her children quickly came to love Michael and Patrick. They hoped that after Patrick's death, their's could become Michael's forever home. This a story of how one man faces death bravely after seeing that his son is lovingly cared for by someone who could guide Michael through the incredibly difficult times ahead, which allowed him to face death peacefully. It is also a story of how young children, particularly Michael, but also Cathy's children, can be guided through terminal illness and death, and how to help them deal with and express their feelings in a safe, accepting environment.
